Â
[ March 3rd - 2013 ] We are happy to announce the winners from our 2nd annual Art contest ! Thank you to everyone that took the time to participate, we are humbled by the time put into some of these pieces - thank you for your effort. Congratulations to Alona Buslaeva, Tristan Woody, and Sonja Murphy for being selected as the winners.Â
We ended up with a tie in our first edition and looks like we might be making that a tradition. Tying for first place and splitting the 1000$ first and 300$ second prizes are Alona and Tristan. Sonja takes home 200$ for third.
Â
Alona's piece is incredibly detailed and the technical skill / shading is really impressive. She has also done a great job of incorporating her chosen theme (Adventure x Art x Music x Ideas) throughout the piece. There are headphones and records shaped like conical shells, adventurous pursuits going on throughout, a mind contemplating the stars while connecting with the rest of what is happening in the drawing... freedom? - overall a beautifully made piece of Art.
Â

[ Alona Buslaeva - Adventure x Art x Music x Ideas - 26" x 36" Pencil on Paper ]
Â
Tristan chose the theme 'Adventure Awaits' and her piece seems to bring us right into it. You can imagine this shared moment to be at the end of a long day of whitewater adventuring, the stories of the day being relayed just as thoughts might be turning to what lies downstream tomorrow. The colour and shading bring a warmth and comfort to the painting and the stars seem to be calling out to us. Another great piece.

Â
Sonja chose the theme 'One Life to Live' and has created another really nice piece that speaks to it. The classic hour-glass imagery and 'temporary' theme are contrasted by the (relative) permanence of the water cycle, further highlighting our own impermanence. Here are Sonja's own words describing this piece: "'One life to live' is particularly meaningful to me when looked through the lens of time - this is the hour that we have been waiting for.  The reason life is worth living is for this, the current moment, and what we can do within it." We also always like the Tribe logo getting incorporated into Mountains/Rivers and overall like the look and feel of this piece.

Thank you once again to everyone that participated, we look forward to our next one of these Art contests which will be announced later in the year !

RESULTS FROM OUR FIRST CONTEST !
Congratulations to our Art Contest winners !!
We are incredibly thankful to all of the talented artists who participated in this contest... so many great entries ! We had strong support for all of the finalists but eventually we settled on our winners.
We had a really hard time deciding on a single winner, art is so subjective and each piece has it's own great quality. After agonizing over it for a week we decided on a tie.Â
With that said, tying for 1st place and splitting the 1000$ 1st + 200$ 2nd place cash prizes are Katya Kulkova and Conor Nolan.Â
Katya submitted a huge 54" wide acrylic painting with intricate detail and a great visual translation of the theme she chose - ' One Life to Live ' ... She also had by far the best logo incorporation, some of you probably didn't even see it at first glace? (hint: it's big and on the right)
Katya Kulkova - One Life to Live - 54" x 36" Acrylic on Canvas
Conor's submission has a strong immediate impact. Conor also chose ' One Life to Live ' and his image makes for a great metaphor because most would agree that those who live passionately must consistently confront their fears. I think all of us who have pushed beyond our comfort zone during adventures in the mountains and on rivers can relate to this feeling.Â

Conor Nolan - One Life to Live - 24"x36" Mixed Media. Hand drawn and digital.
Finally, in 3rd place is the submission from the imagination of Kai Cabunoc-Boettcher. Kai chose the theme 'Perspective is Important' and did a really creative job of interpreting it. His entangled trees, the 'zoomed out' focus on our world and his choice of words within the piece ( "elevate habitual nature / embark for the heart " ) all make this a positive image that resonates. We also liked the tribe logo as a constellation. dope. We scraped together what we could and are making this 3rd place cash prize 200$ (instead of the originally planned 100$).

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that participated. We know that this stuff takes time and effort and we are honoured to have had so many talented people involved in our first of these contests. Looking forward to the next art contest later this year ! You can check out all the entries HERE.
Check TRIBERIDER.com for our next contest in the next week or so... This one is for the music heads / djs in our community and will essentially be a remix contest using acapellas from whitewater's own hip hop talent Adrenaline Rush.
